In this white paper, Amplify Platform’s Chief Technology Officer David Hatfield, Chief Product Officer Churni Bhattacharya and Chief Marketing Officer Jack Martin argue that connected data is the foundation of competitive advantage in the AI era.

They say that investment performance no longer separates advisory firms as clearly as it once did. Portfolios are increasingly commoditized, fees are compressing and clients increasingly buy the relationship rather than the return. What now separates firms is what they know and how quickly they can act on it. AI readiness is not a feature added later; it is an architectural outcome established through data design.

The paper defines this modern form of alpha as an information edge built on connected data, not merely integrated data. Integration means wiring data systems together. Connected data goes much further, establishing one standardized definition of every core entity, enforcing that definition at the source and then unifying the data. When firms connect systems before agreeing on meaning, they create integration without coherence.

AI has made this problem more urgent, the authors say. Most firms operate on technology stacks assembled one purchase at a time: CRM, planning, portfolio, billing and custodian systems that were not designed to work together. The same household or account may be defined differently across platforms. When AI is applied to those inconsistencies, it can produce confident answers built on the wrong data. Employees must then verify outputs manually, creating what the paper calls a “verification tax” that erases the efficiency AI was meant to deliver.

Disconnected data limits firms in three ways, according to the paper. It creates operational drag through manual onboarding, reconciliation and reporting. It produces a fragmented client experience because no advisor can deliver consistent, personalized service at scale when records are scattered across multiple systems. It also leaves leaders making decisions without a connected view of profitability, capacity or risk.

The return on connection appears in efficiency, growth and enterprise value. The paper cites benchmarking showing that top-performing firms spend less time per client on operations and that firms using integrated architectures generate stronger organic growth than much of the industry. Connected firms are also more transferable because buyers value operational efficiency, clean data lineage and scalable infrastructure.

Amplify says its architecture follows this approach, supporting grounded intelligence, turning advisor judgment into a firm asset and enabling AI-assisted product development via code review, documentation and incident analysis.

The paper closes with a five-step path to AI readiness: assess the data landscape, establish a single source of truth, automate routine workflows, turn connected data into insight and build a culture of connection.
