WSR Names CFO 5 – Top Wealth Management CFOs

Despite the moniker, chief financial officers have long since grown their responsibilities and influence beyond mere financial statements.

Today’s CFOs are increasingly instrumental to a company’s success. In addition to finance, they help craft strategy, execute mergers and acquisitions, communicate with investors and manage risk and compliance. The modern CFO is also responsible for executing the digital transformation of a company, including how businesses use analytics and artificial intelligence to improve overall performance and efficiency.

Our third annual edition of the invitation-only CFO 5 features executives who have demonstrated great skill and leadership in wealth management. They have fashioned careers for their peers and future CFOs to emulate.

We congratulate the winners, who are listed in alphabetical order below, on their accomplishments.

Mark Mayo joined Orion Advisor Solutions as Chief Financial Officer in September 2024 as a highly experienced senior leader with more than 30 years of finance experience. In this role, Mayo is responsibility for strengthening Orion’s financial infrastructure, overseeing financial strategy and advancing the company’s strategic roadmap as it continues to grow.

Prior to joining Orion, Mayo served as CFO for DISA Global Solutions, a consortium drug testing provider. His career also includes serving in CFO roles at Connect America, HireRight and several divisions of General Electric. His career began at General Electric where he achieved the status of Six Sigma Master Black Belt.

Mayo holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada.

“Success as a CFO in wealth management—and beyond—requires a balance of strategic vision, operational discipline, and ethical leadership,” he said. “Prioritize relationships, embrace innovation, and stay adaptable in a rapidly evolving industry. Never stop learning, and always seek to add value. The most effective leaders combine financial expertise with integrity, forward thinking, and a commitment to making a lasting impact.”

Scarpello earned a Master of Science degree in Finance from Bentley University. He lives near Boston with his wife and four children.

“A strong CFO has to have a solid understanding of the underlying business to add true value as a strategic leader for the organization,” he said. “To be a strategic leader for the firm, a CFO must understand what drives the business forward – the financial results alone won’t provide that level of insight.”
