An RIA acquisition brings together more than assets, advisors and clients. It also brings together compliance histories, compensation arrangements and operating practices that can expose both firms to compliance and regulatory risks. This week, we examine how buyers and sellers can prevent and manage compliance issues, including how AI tools can help.
The Most Important Year-End Review Is Your Own
Scott Leak of FP Transitions explains why advisory firm owners should examine margins, productivity and founder dependence alongside revenue when assessing the strength and transferable value of their businesses.
He outlines a gradual approach to developing next-generation owners and recommends establishing a baseline for enterprise value before setting measurable goals for 2027.
Stop Asking For Referrals. Start Creating Introductions.
Emily Blue of Hue Partners and Bill Cates of Referral Coach International explain how RIA founders can build a repeatable process for client introductions, spread those practices across the team and reduce dependence on a single rainmaker.
This article accompanies a video interview between Blue and Cates in the Hue Partners: M&A Confidential video series.
When RIAs Merge, Compliance Risks Multiply
RIA acquisitions can create compliance risks that persist long after closing. We explore how buyers and sellers can address those risks, and how AI can help compliance teams through due diligence and integration.
Sander Ressler of Essential Edge, Kaitlyn Wulfken of CRC Oyster and Mario Chilin of EP Wealth explain what buyers should test, what sellers should fix and how firms can address conflicts of interest while combining compliance programs.
Chris Mills of Feathery, Sid Yenamandra of SurgeONE.ai, Sindhu Joseph of CogniCor and Michael Wood of Domify discuss how AI can aid the process.
Annuities Gain Ground As Advisors Rethink Portfolio Protection
Pacific Life’s Steve Goldberg says annuities are gaining favor as higher yields, bond volatility and product innovation prompt advisors to reconsider how they protect client portfolios.
Goldberg explains the differences among four annuity categories, why wealthier households are considering them and how some advisors are using them to replace part of the fixed income allocation.
Dear Ryan: Transformed On Paper, Uncertain In Practice
In his latest Dear Ryan column, Ryan George of Docupace responds to an RIA leader whose AI investment has made work faster but left questions about whether the firm has truly changed how it serves clients.
George asks the RIA leader to consider what the firm’s best advisor can do now that was impossible two years ago. The answer, he argues, separates optimization from transformation.
